The city of Brussels is located in central Belgium and serves as the country’s capital. It is also the largest city in the country with over one million people living there. The city grew in popularity after the Second World War when it became home to the headquarters of the international organisation, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). The city later played a vital role in the formation of the European Union. This influx of visitors to the city from oversees has made Brussels Airport one of the largest in the world. Brussels also has over 80 different museums spread throughout the city, including the Royal Museum of Art and History, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Natural Science Museum of Belgium and the BELvue Museum. The Atomium is a 103-metre high sculpture that was designed for the World’s Fair of 1958. Right in front of the sculpture is Mini-Europe which has a unique display of miniature sculptures of some of Europe’s most famous attractions.
Brussels International Airport
Brussels Airport is located just 13 kilometres from the centre of Brussels. It is the largest and busiest airport in Belgium and handles numerous domestic and international flights daily, including flights from East Midlands to Brussels. It has an array of services for passengers, including money exchange booths, a travel agency, internet connection, several shops, restaurants and cafes.
The airport also has a train shuttle that takes passengers from the airport level 1 to the centre of Brussels. The train has a regular service leaving every 15 minutes and takes about 15 minutes to reach Brussels. A bus also leaves the airport every 20 minutes from Level 0. Taxis and car hire services are also available and are located outside the arrivals section.
