Billund is a small town in Denmark located in the centre of Jutland peninsula. While Billund has a population of just over 6,000 people, it has become a well-known town that attracts millions of visitors each year. This popularity is because the town is home to the world famous Lego corporate headquarters. This, along with the fact that the first Legoland was built here, has made Billund a very popular tourist destination. It is also home to the second largest airport in Denmark, which oversees hundreds of flights each week, including flights from Birmingham to Billund.
The most popular attraction in Billund is the Legoland Billund theme park. The park uses more than 60 million Lego pieces to build various exhibits, including Polar Land, Pirate Land, Knights Kingdom, The Temple, and Atlantis. The park also has over 50 rides and attractions. The Lego factory also offers daily tours through parts of the factory to show how these popular building bricks are manufactured.
In addition to Legoland, the area also includes the Lalandia Billund park that has a huge indoor waterpark covering over 10,000 square metres. The park also has several other activities such as bowling alleys, mini golf courses and playgrounds. Many visitors also make the short drive 16 km north to the Givskud Zoo which has dozens of animals, including zebras, giraffes, gorillas, and elephants.
Billund Airport was first established as a private landing site for the owner of the Lego company, but has since been transformed into the second largest airport in Denmark. It receives numerous flights on a daily basis, including flights from Birmingham to Billund. It is a full-service airport and has many facilities, including four restaurants, numerous shopping venues, conference facilities, check-in kiosks, and Wi-Fi services.
The fastest and most convenient method to travel to the centre of Billund is to take a taxi. There are many taxis located at the airport throughout the day. However, if you are visiting during the months of July or August the airport offers a shuttle bus that runs from the airport to Billund throughout the day. Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar and Budget all provide car hire services at the airport for your convenience.
For travellers who are heading to surrounding areas, the Express Shuttle makes frequent trips to Vejile and Aarhus and local buses also make trips to Vejile, Kolding, Horsen and Grindsted.
